Q: Is America different from that point of view then?
Peter Weir: Yeah, they’re very tough on nudity, but not on violence.
Darren Aronofsky: Sex and violence has been flipped in this country. We’re training soldiers, but you can’t show any form of sexuality. Which is just ridiculous. You know my kid does not react when he walks down the street and sees the Calvin Klein ads of Eva Mendes looking beautiful on a huge billboard, he doesn’t even notice it. It’s not an issue for him. But when he sees that Nikita ad which was everywhere in New York with that high…with that crazy gun, the 4 year-old’s like, “What’s that gun?!” So it’s like, what are we teaching these kids? And they say, the MPAA argues that violence is okay in middle america. That’s the society we’ve become. Where violence is okay and sexuality is completely—we hide from it, we shut it down, and we edit. (8:00-11:24)
