I spent the day building a PipBoy for my Fallout costume for Armageddon. I bought 2mm sheets of craft foam for $2. Using the templates from here , I cut them out using a Stanley knife from my toolbox, and the cardboard back of a weekly meal planner pad. I built layers 1-4 (with the exception of making the top layer 4mm instead of 6mm).
Because I couldn’t find a glue gun, I used some Shoe Goo that was lying around. The fumes made me dizzy, and it was very difficult to work with, but it was holding everything together. I even stapled some parts together (see the sides of the grill).
I added a few details, like the screws. I cut a cap from a long-life milk carton in half for the dial. I cut out a layer of foam at the bottom left for that little corner thingy. There’s a paperclip wrapped around the frame on the right side. I should’ve added some more…
I sprayed a coat of silver. Waited. Dicked about on the internet. Decided that it needed brown. Went out and bought some brown spraypaint for $4. I also bought a delicious pizza roll. I got home and sprayed it brown. Waited. Dicked about on the internet some more. Then I added the rest of the details when it was dry. White out and red nail polish for the Geiger counter, black nailpolish and Copic marker for the scratches, rust marks and a bit of old blood. There’s even a little tally there. It’s at 7. Body count? Who knows…
Then I grabbed my Stanley knife and scratched the fuck out of it.
I attached it to a comfy foam bracer, and slid my iPod Touch in. The app I’m using is PipClock. My “radio” plays a variety of 40’s, 50’s, rockabilly, swing, cheeky retro R’n’B, and a few anachronistic tracks thrown in, but with the same flavour (eg. Puppinni Sisters, early Beatles, stuff like that).
So, this is my $6 PipBoy. I’m not a prop or costume maker, so it’s not the best, but I’m quite happy with what I’ve ended up with, considering my skills and resources.
You’re fucking incredible.
