Blind Willie Johnson - Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground
So dear Ellie pointed out that I inadvertently hit a milestone on last.fm, 8,000 plays.
This was the 8,000th track so I figured I’d share it.
This track is actually featured on the Voyager Golden Record, ‘The Sounds of Earth’.
The record had 27 tracks intended the to represent the diversity of life on Earth. This song was chosen as the human expression of loneliness.
While Johnson only really hums, he said the subject of the song was the crucifixion of Christ.
Jack White called it “the greatest example of slide guitar ever recorded”.
Ry Cooder called it “the most soulful, transcendent piece in all of American music”.
And in an article in The Times it was labelled “the most intense and startling blues record ever made”.
Give it a listen.
